GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEE'S ON AN ESCALATOR

There are many things that one should know about the Metro in D.C., but one part in particular is the escalators. There are certain rules to the escalator and some of them are even displayed in the train cars. For example there is a new word called an escalump, yes, an escalump. The definition of an escalump is stopping right before you get off the escalator thus being a ‘lump’ in the way of others. One of the biggest rules to follow is standing to your right while people on the left walk. For those of you who don’t know what the word for that is, its called an escalefter.
Last week, as Laurie and I went off to work we got in line to go up the escalators when a problem arose. Now, keep in mind everyone that leaves Union Station is in a suit and tie trotting off to Capitol Hill (there may be women in skirts too). As we headed up the escalator we noticed there were many escalefters. Realizing we would be standing the whole way up we took a more comfortable stance. Halfway up the escalator we heard a huge screech. Everyone swayed back and forth and the escalator gave out and came to a complete stop. People were looking around at each other wondering what they should do next.
Finally we started seeing people move as the escalefters picked up the pace at the top of the escalator to get off. Eventually we all made it up and off and got to work. I am proud to say that the government officials on the escalator didn’t come to the same conclusion as the ones in this video. We would have been there all day (although I did have my cell phone unlike the people in the video…maybe that would have changed the outcome)!
