Call 9-11

This night ended like any Saturday night should have ended calm, quiet, and ready for sleep. Katelyn and I decided we would stay up a little later and warm up by the fire before retiring to bed. Music was playing softly in the background while we talked about our nights adventures when Katelyn asked me if I heard the doorbell. I laughed telling her no, thinking to myself who would ring the doorbell at 1:30 a.m. Not even a minute later I heard a noise, not the doorbell, but a pounding on the door. With my heart beating fast I thought maybe the cops were upstairs telling us to evacuate, I couldn't explain why that might be the case but I did. I started to slowly walk up the stairs when Katelyn pulled my hand telling me I shouldn't go. I kept walking telling her my reasoning behind why I should go when we both heard it...someone was shaking the door! They were trying to break in!
I grabbed Katelyn and immediately went to my room while turning off the lights behind me (I didn't want them to see us as we went down the hall, obviously). Panic stricken, Katelyn and I both had our phones in hand as we wondered what to do first, call 9-11 or my dad. I called my dad while she repeatedly told me to dial 9-11. I considered calling 9-11, but didn't want to call them saying we heard a noise when it may have been nothing but a prank. Finally after her persistence to call I told her she should call. Her phone made a loud noise after dialing so we turned her phone off hoping they (robber/murderer) wouldn’t have heard. She frantically searched my room asking me if I had a knife. I don't know why any girl would have a knife in her room, but I do know what she would have, heels and a straightener. Since Katelyn didn't have a knife she thought in her self defense she would just jab him with a high heel. While she was thinking this I thought I might plug in my straightener and maybe burn him (or style his hair?!). I'm not sure if either would have worked considering we were shaking so bad, but these are the bright and creative ideas sisters get in a panicked mode late at night!
Then a random number called my sister back and we thought it may have been the same person who was at the door. Of course we didn't answer it. I finally got a hold of my dad who was two floors away, but still able to keep in touch (thanks to cell phones)! He came downstairs and didn't see anyone, but did call the random number. It turns out the police call the numbers back when you hang up the phone, imagine that. The police came to check out the scene but to no avail. My dad questioned us asking if we were sure it was the door. YES it was the door! We knew for sure it was! Despite the fact that our dad may not have believed us we did make him sleep downstairs after all the calamity.
We never did find out what or who it was that was shaking our door on that late winter night, but I do like to think that maybe the robber/murderer knew our secret plan with our weapons of mass destruction and ran away!

Festival of Trees

This is the cute girl tree...

and this is the boy tree... and the avid golfers to go with it!
The spirit of Christmas was with Tyler that night!

College Prom

I will never understand, but will always know that one thing girls love and always will love is to dress up and dance!
The Capitol was being remodeled when I was in high school so I'm glad I could still get in the classic Capitol pic even if it may be in college!

Grape Juice

As children growing up grape juice was a delicacy as well as a delight! We loved it, but after many t-shirt stains and maybe a few carpet stains our young mother became much wiser and started to buy white grape juice. Seventeen years later, I looked in the fridge one morning and saw that rare delicacy once again! The grape juice was back! We explained that we were much more capable of keeping the juice in the cup and nowhere else. Unfortunately for Jordan he didn't know about our earlier days and the knowledge Stacy, Katelyn, and I gained about the real grape juice. He poured the glass into his cup, but didn't realize it was the wrong side! We quickly cleaned it up before the evidence could be proven and the juice stolen from us once again!

Midnight Twilight

Confession, I love Twilight and all that comes with it (mainly Edward). I was trying not to get my hopes up too much by seeing the movie, but I couldn't help it and that is what started the catastrophe. Bottom line, they didn't have enough money or time to make the movie as vivid and good as my imagination or any other girls for that matter. Don't get me wrong there were good moments...but that's all I can say...moments. I started to come to the realization that maybe the book was just as cheesy as the movie (no, couldn't be true, could it?!). One thing that disturbed me was how Edward kind of was a creeper...I mean the whole watch Bella in her sleep... his intensity...the red lipstick...it all screams creepy stalker. I never thought of it that way in the book so this didn't make me very excited when I saw it in the movies.
After that realization I concluded that the book wasn't as cheesy as the movie and Edward was just put in a bad light. Descriptions in the book are definitely portrayed differently than they are in movies (or at least differently in my head which is why books are so great). I have many friends who enjoyed the movie so my other thought was seeing it at midnight may have made me a little critical and therefore I should see it again.

The Leonardo

My mom, Stacy, and I went to Body Worlds a couple of weeks ago and it was incredible. While waiting in line, there was a skeleton projected on the wall that would post comments people would text to it. I let my mom know she was good looking, that Steve has chicken legs... and asked Stacy if she would marry me (she said yes, but didn't know who to say yes to considering I was pretty sly about texting it without her seeing)!!

Back in Black

Did the 'blackout' help us win this game...? Who knows, but we won and that's what counts! It was fun to see the whole stadium in black. It was a change in scenery, although nothing can beat that sea of red! 10 and 0! Go Utes!

As Under Armour would say, "We must protect this house!"

Election Day

Just thought I would reminisce over election day six years ago. Yes, six years ago Jill Roylance and I were on the front page of the Tribune on election day. Little did either of us know this fact unitl we arrived at school. That is my claim to fame and as close as I got to being involved in politics until election day this year when:

I voted for the first time and

recieved a package from Senator Hatch all in the same day!

It was a good election day for sure. I recieved a book on Senators and how to properly address someone in a formal letter as well as details for D.C. Yeah for packages!

The best of rubber cement

Rhinestones + Rubber Cement = tear drops (may possibly be permanent)

Now to set the record straight I read the label of the bottle and it said not to inhale or eat the rubber cement, but said nothing about irritation of the skin. I also tested a little bit on my hand and it rubbed off so easily (thus named 'rubber' cement...right?!). I then concluded it was safe to put near my eye. Fifteen minutes later when it was still burning I decided against the idea of leaving the rhinestones on. I figured in that amount of time it couldn't have done that much damage...little did I know my face became swollen by the time I went to work. I decided to ask the pharmacist what the best thing I could use to relieve myself from the burning feeling. After some cortisone I felt much better despite the fact I had 4 dots seared into my face.

So lesson here is labels don't always tell you what you need to know. Secondly, what may seem like common sense may be skewed in the heat of the moment. The last piece of advice is liquid band-aid works the exact same with rhinestones but without the burning sensation that follows. So just remember, liquid band-aid is your best bet if you want something to stick!

I am stuck on band-aids because band-aid is stuck on me!

Ute/I am Legend/Pangea party

These are the people hosting the party...

This was the basement of all people who showed up. It got pretty cozy.

They had to end up sitting on the stairs.

This is called the pioneer pose.

We had people upstairs as well, that is where the food was. Delicious!

Brighton High Cheer Squad

We were the Brighton High Cheer squad for Halloween this year. The waiter almost thought we were on the BHS team, but was quickly corrected by our good friend Liz. We even came up with a cheer, "Ready? OK! B-H-S! Whahoo!!" For a moment we all considered what it would have been like if our dream really came true. Our conclusion, we should have tried out for the team.

After All I Can Do

To preface, I have to mention that I have been looking for this poem for months now and I couldn't believe I finally found it! I had first heard it last June and since then it has been on my mind. It is a simple reminder that our Savior is always there and He is able to give us hope in our moments of despair. I say moments because we can choose to allow how we go about our lives. As long as we strive to do His will, we are able to see the brightness of the Son and share that light to others. So with that...

After All We Can Do

I had been in that hole for a very long time—
In the dark and the damp, in the cold and the slime.
The shaft was above me; I saw it quite clear,
But there’s no way I ever could reach it from here.
I could not remember the world way up there,
So I lost every hope and gave in to despair.

I knew nothing but darkness, the floor, and the wall.
Then from off in the distance I heard someone call:
“Get up! Get ready! There’s nothing the matter!
Take rocks and take sticks and build up a fine ladder!”
This was a thought that had not crossed my mind,
But I started to stack all the stones I could find.

When I ran out of stones, then old sticks were my goal,
For some way or another I’d climb from that hole.
I soon had a ladder that stood very tall,
And I thought, “I’ll soon leave this place once and for all!”
I climbed up my ladder, a difficult chore,
For from lifting those boulders, my shoulders were sore.

I climbed up the ladder, but soon had to stop,
For my ladder stopped short, some ten feet from the top.
I went back down my ladder and felt all around,
But there were no more boulders nor sticks to be found.
I sat down in the darkness and started to cry.
I’d done all I could do and I gave my best try.

But in spite of my work, in this hole I must die.
And all I could do was to sit and think, “Why?”
Was my ladder too short? Was my hole much too deep?
Then from way up on high came a voice: “Do not weep.”
And then faith, hope, and love entered into my chest
As the voice calmly told me that I'd done my best.

He said, “You have worked hard, and your labor’s been rough,
But the ladder you’ve built is at last tall enough.
So do not despair; there is reason to hope,
Just climb up your ladder; I’ll throw down my rope.”
I climbed up my ladder, then climbed up the cord.
When I got to the top of it, there stood the Lord.

I’ve never been happier; my struggle was done.
I blinked in the brightness that came from the Son.
I fell to the ground as His feet I did kiss.
I cried, “Lord, can I ever repay Thee for this?”
He looked all about. There were holes in the ground.
They had people inside, and were seen all around.

There were thousands of holes that were damp, dark and deep.
Then the Lord looked at me, and He said, “feed my sheep,”
And he went on his way to save other lost souls,
So I got right to work, calling down to the holes,
“Get up! Get ready! There is nothing the matter!
Take rocks, and take sticks, and build up a fine ladder!”

It now was my calling to spread the good word,
The most glorious message that man ever heard:
That there’s one who is coming to save one and all,
And we need to be ready when he gives the call.
He’ll pull us all out of the holes that we’re in
And save all our souls from cold death and from sin.

So do not lose faith; there is reason to hope:
Just climb up your ladder; he’ll throw down his rope.

THE MASK

This was the dream costume of a second grade girl, a skeleton. It may seem sad to want to be a horrifying skeleton rather than a princess at that age, but there was a dream that went behind that mask. I had a vision of running down the streets from door to door in a GLOW-IN-THE-DARK skeleton outfit. I could see myself lighting up the dark streets as I walked by with kids wanting to follow where I would trick-or-treat. Only the glowing bones could be seen and my idea seemed so original so cool I knew I could pull it off.
The project started...day in and day out I looked for glow in the dark bones I could wear, but nothing. There were plastic ones to hang on doors but I knew it would not be sufficient enough for my vision of enchanting the world with my costume. The project was now down to crunch time and I still hadn' t found what I was looking for. Sadly I had to let go of a part of my dream and buy a 'normal' skeleton body suit. The day before Halloween came and shopping through the isles with my mom I saw it! The last Glow-in-the-dark skeleton mask was neatly sitting on the shelf waiting for me. I grabbed it telling my mom, "this is it! this is it!" Despite what she tried to say to me I knew this is what I needed to make my Halloween dream come to life! I did not see this mask as the face of death, but the glowing skeleton fit for me.
The Halloween parade was here and my dad painted my face as a skeleton with eyelashes on me...I didn't understand why he was doing that because I was going to wear my mask anyway. He told me it was just in case I took it off. He then put my mask on and tied the two strings in a bow on the top of my head. It didn't occur to me that he was doing this to make me look more like a girl than a creeper. All I knew was that night was going to be the best trick-or-treat night ever!
The moment it dawned on me was when my two sisters and I went trick-or-treating to our first house and after I said "trick-or-treat" they gave my two sisters candy bracelets (my favorite) and me a piece of licorice. I couldn't believe they thought I was a boy! Couldn't they hear my voice...definitely a girl! I was crushed! What had happened to my dream? And why wasn't my face glowing ( I realized after it got dark my mask didn't quiet get the glow I wanted it to).
I am sad to say my dream went a different direction that Halloween night and even worse I still don't see glow-in-the-dark skeleton costumes to this day! To make this tragic event end well, for those that like happy endings, I did get many good scares out if it with my brother. Every time my sisters and I would put on the mask we would come running and he would go screaming! There were many days entertained between us, the mask, and Jordan.
The Mask...what more can I say?!

"This-is-Halloween..."

How true that is!

My parents helped with the Brighton Morp dance and they went all out! The picture with tyler was the corner that they spent almost all day working on. It looked like an authentic pirate scene if there were still such a thing!
Camo...it works great! I almost blend in with the background in this pic!

Maria Dance is a co-concertmaster and we are her friends...that makes us almost famous! She had an amazing solo and we were all at an awe. It was a fun halloween concert especially that we all got to dress up. Liz almost thought we had to 'dress up' like Sunday attire when I first mentioned it to her.

Spoon me! It was a first for me and I have to say it went over well. We heard the spoons were biodegradable and thought we would test it out... Yep...biodegradable.
